How to Commission a Custom Painting as a Diwali or Holiday Gift

There is a particular problem with gift-giving for people who have everything: everything they want, they already have. The meaningful stuff — the things that carry weight — cannot be bought from a shelf.

A commissioned original painting is different. It is made specifically for the person who will receive it, with their space, their palette, their emotional life in mind. It arrives with a handwritten note and a certificate of authenticity. It changes the room it enters. And it holds its value in a way almost nothing else given as a gift does.

This Diwali — November 8, 2026 — and this holiday season, I am opening a limited number of commission slots. Here is how the process works, what it costs, and what you need to know to order in time.

Why Diwali is the right moment for art as a gift

LUMINEMOTIVE, the philosophy that guides my painting practice, is entirely about light. The painting of light as emotional language — not just how it looks but what it makes you feel. There is no occasion in the year more naturally aligned with that than Diwali. The Festival of Lights, the triumph of luminosity. A painting that holds light in the way mine do is not a generic gift wrapped in cultural symbolism. It is the symbolism itself, made permanent.

For Indian-American families and diaspora collectors specifically: art from an artist who understands that inheritance — who grew up in India, who moved to the United States, who spent two decades in corporate life before choosing the canvas — carries a different kind of meaning than art purchased impersonally. It is not just what you give. It is the story behind it.

    How the commission process works

    The process has four phases:

Phase 1: Discovery and Consultation (1–2 weeks) We begin with a conversation — virtual or in person. I ask about the space the painting will live in, the palette of the room, the emotional intent. What do you want the person to feel when they look at this piece in ten years? This consultation is free and carries no obligation.

Phase 2: Concept and Proposal (1–2 weeks) Based on our conversation, I develop a direction: suggested medium, size, palette, and emotional intention. You review and either approve or redirect. No brush touches canvas until you are satisfied with the concept.

Phase 3: The Creation (2–4 weeks) The painting is made. You receive regular progress updates — photographs of the work at each stage. If something is not right, we adjust.

Phase 4: Delivery (1–2 weeks) Your painting arrives carefully packed, with a certificate of authenticity, a care guide, and a handwritten note from me.

    Pricing

Commission pricing depends on size, medium, and scope. For a meaningful original piece for a home — typically 18×24 to 24×36 inches — the starting investment is in the range that positions the work as a significant gift rather than a decorative purchase. Email contact@aprajita.art and I will respond personally with a quote after understanding your vision.

    The holiday deadlines

To receive your commission in time for Diwali (November 8): contact me by October 25, 2026. To receive your commission in time for Christmas (December 25): contact me by November 21, 2026.

I am accepting a limited number of commissions this season. Once the slots are filled, I cannot take new holiday orders.

A note on why I limit commissions

A commission is not a product. It is a relationship between the person who makes the work and the person who will live with it. I cannot make meaningful commissions at volume. Six slots this holiday season is the number that lets me give each piece — and each collector — the attention the work requires.
