Looking for an art advisor?
Traditional art advisors and art consultants usually work on commission or retainers designed for large budgets. If you are starting an art collection — or have bought a few pieces and want direction — you need honest guidance, not a sales pitch.
This is one focused session with a working artist who sells through galleries, art fairs and auctions: how buying art really works, what to look for, and how to collect with confidence. Online, or in person near Bridgewater, NJ.

Art collecting questions
About the mentorship
What does an art advisor do?+
An art advisor helps collectors decide what to buy, where to buy it and what to pay. Traditional advisors and art consultants often work on commission or retainer for large budgets; this mentorship gives you the same kind of independent guidance in a single, fixed-price session.
Who is this art collector mentorship for?+
New collectors who want to buy their first original artwork with confidence, and growing collectors who own a few pieces and want direction — a focus, a budget and a plan for what to buy next.
Do I need a big budget to collect art?+
No. Many serious collections started with small original works, prints from respected artists and pieces bought directly from emerging artists. A clear budget and a clear eye matter more than a large one.
We can plan a collection that fits your budget.
Will you try to sell me your own artwork?+
No. The session is about your collecting — how and where to buy, and what to look for — not a sales pitch for any artist, including Aprajita.
Can I learn art collecting online?+
Yes. Sessions are held live on a video call, so you can join from anywhere. If you are near Bridgewater, New Jersey, an in-person session at the studio can be arranged.
How does the session work?+
Book and pay on this page. Within two business days the studio emails you session times. You meet Aprajita for 90 minutes on a video call, and you receive your collecting plan in writing afterwards.
Collecting art
How do I start an art collection?+
Start by looking at a lot of art — galleries, art fairs, museums and artists’ studios — and noticing what you return to. Set a budget, buy the first piece you genuinely love, keep the paperwork, and let your taste guide the next purchase rather than trends.
Want a plan for your first purchases?
Where should I buy original art?+
Galleries, art fairs, auctions, online platforms and directly from artists all work — each with different prices, protections and experiences. Galleries and established fairs offer guidance and documentation; buying directly from artists can be more personal and affordable.
Should I buy at an art fair, a gallery or an auction?+
Galleries are best for relationships and guidance, art fairs for seeing many artists at once, and auctions for specific works — but auctions move fast and add buyer’s premiums. Knowing how each works before you buy prevents expensive surprises.
We can walk through how each one works before you buy.
How do I know if a painting is worth the price?+
Compare the artist’s other works of similar size and medium, look at their exhibition history and sales record, and check what is included — framing, certificate of authenticity, shipping. A fair price is consistent with the artist’s established market.
Is art a good investment?+
Some art gains value, most does not significantly, and art is hard to sell quickly. The safest approach is to buy work you love, from artists with a consistent record, at fair prices — and treat any increase in value as a bonus rather than the goal.
What is the difference between an original and a limited edition?+
An original is one unique work made by the artist’s hand. A limited edition is a set number of reproductions or prints, usually signed and numbered. Both can be collectable; originals cost more, while editions let you own an artist’s work at a lower price.
How do I find my taste as an art collector?+
See as much art as you can, photograph what stops you, and look for patterns — colour, subject, mood or medium. Over time those patterns become the theme that makes a collection feel personal and coherent.
How do I care for and insure my art?+
Keep art out of direct sunlight and away from humidity and heat sources, use proper framing, and keep receipts and certificates together. As a collection grows, a specialist fine-art insurance policy and a simple inventory are worth having.
